In-Wall Nesting Box Brick

The Bekstone 28 mm Hole Nesting Bird Box Brick (305 x 140 x 102 mm) is a tumbled face block crafted to provide habitats for small UK birds. Designed to meet UK Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) regulations, this innovative brick helps house builders and developers enhance biodiversity in their projects. It shares the same dimensions and appearance as Bekstone's existing tumbled stone building blocks (305 x 140 x 102 mm), ensuring seamless integration into various architectural designs.

28 mm Holes for Smaller Birds

The 28 mm hole in the nesting box is ideal for species such as Blue Tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), Coal Tits (Periparus ater), Marsh Tits (Poecile palustris), Great Tits (Parus major), and Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus). Incorporating these bird box bricks into construction projects supports avian populations, promoting ecological balance and sustainability, while maintaining aesthetic consistency with traditional building materials. This approach underscores a commitment to environmental stewardship in urban development.

Easily Increase On-site Biodiversity & Habitat

By incorporating these nesting box bricks, house builders and developers can adhere to UK Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) regulations, which mandate measures to improve biodiversity in new developments.

Matching Looks to Bekstone Tumbled Walling for Aesthetic Cohesion

The Bekstone Nesting Bird Box Bricks not only provides essential nesting sites for various species of birds, crucial to in our ecosystem, but also maintains the visual appeal and uniformity of Bekstone's tumbled stone walling blocks. This innovative approach allows for ecological sustainability without compromising on design, making it an ideal choice for environmentally-conscious building projects.

Environmental Benefits

Integrating these bird box bricks demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship and enhances the ecological value of new developments. These blocks are manufactured with the same environmental and sustainability standards that are met for all Bekstone products. Bekstone walling has achieved a BREEAM 'A' certification.

Made in Burford, Oxfordshire

Bekstone Nesting Box Bricks are made of reconstituted stone (Oolite limestone) quarried at our factory site, at Burford Quarry, in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom using 100% 'green' electricity at our production plants and offices. The box behind the facing stone is upcycled from waste stone material, to help improve the units environmental footprint.

Installation & Siting of Nesting Box Bricks

Bird Box Bricks are best placed on a north or east facing wall. This ensures the nest is not exposed to too much sun (and potential overheating), and protects the nest from prevailing wind and rain (which is south-westerly in the UK). An east facing aspect also helps birds detect the first signs of sunrise (early bird etc) so is aligned to their natural Circadian rhythm.

The Nesting Box Bricks should also be elevated at least 2 metres from the ground, up to about 4 metres, as this will encourage occupation by nesting birds and seems to correlate to naturally sited nesting elevations.

Bekstone Nesting Box Bricks should be mortared into the normal course pattern just like a standard 305 x 140 tumbled block. As the brick is hollow (to provide the habitat for the nesting birds) it should not be considered as a full load-bearing structural block, but treated similarly to a ventilation brick.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Regulations

The UK Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) regulations, became mandatory for all developers 12 February 2024 under the Environment Act 2021 (small, large and public developments). The regulations require all new developments to ensure a minimum 10% increase in biodiversity post-construction compared to pre-development levels. This aims to address biodiversity loss, promote ecosystem restoration, and integrate natural habitats within urban areas. For house builders, this means incorporating measures that actively enhance local biodiversity, such as creating green spaces, restoring habitats, and integrating wildlife-friendly features into their projects.

Bekstone BNG - Wildlife-Friendly Bricks

Bekstone's Biodiversity Net Gain range of wildlife-friendly bricks, including Bee Bricks, Bird Box Bricks, and Bat Box Roost Bricks, offer practical solutions for developers to meet BNG requirements. Bee Bricks provide nesting sites for solitary bees, crucial for pollination and maintaining local plant diversity. Bird Box Bricks offer safe nesting sites for various bird species, supporting avian populations in urban environments. Bat Box Roost Bricks cater to bat species, providing essential roosting spaces within the built environment.

  • Bee Bricks
  • Bird Box Bricks
  • Bat Box Bricks

Incorporating these Bekstone bricks into new housing developments can significantly contribute to biodiversity enhancement. They not only help developers comply with BNG regulations but also foster sustainable and environmentally conscious construction practices. By using these innovative building materials, house builders can create wildlife-friendly habitats, thereby increasing biodiversity density and supporting broader ecological networks within urban and suburban settings.
