See Full DescriptionFossil Setts are ideal for creating edging and boarders with rustic charm throughout the garden. Setts can also provide an attractive border to patio paving or driveways, adding contrast to a paved area. Their small, uniform size means they can be organised into interesting designs and used to accentuate other elements of your patio and garden.
Fossil sandstone can be used to contrast with darker-coloured stone such as slate or black limestone. Double or triple stretcher edge courses become more visually striking when contrasting colours are used. They can also be used to create a chessboard effect when mixed up with different shades of stone.
These Fossil Sandstone Setts are easily adapted to create an array of designs and structural elements for your paving project. They are a square format that allows the installer to organise them into shapes and patterns. Square stone blocks are often laid without any alteration and can be easily trimmed and cut with a masonry chisel if needed.
Wave and fan patterns are a visually impactful design for laying setts. These are laid in such a way that makes use of radius patterns in long or short arcs that intersect and/or overlap. Each block is angled and positioned according to the direction of each arc, and blocks can be cut to size if required.
Similar principles to the wave or fan motifs apply to circular paving. Starting from a central point, which can be a sett or a particular feature such as a bird table, setts are laid out in a tight circle around it. Joints have a wedge-shaped angle to allow for the fanning effect, and the edge courses radiate outwards in greater and greater circles.
These Indian sandstone blocks are hewn with a natural riven surface and have hand-cut edges, created by our expert masons. Each stone is unique, both in the colour and pattern of the stone itself, but also in the nature of its surface finish and artisanal shape.
These sandstone setts should be laid on a full bed of mortar (5:1 cement mix) and we recommend either priming slurry or an SBR additive are used to aid bonding and help prevent rising moisture. The mortar bed (laying course) should be 50 mm in depth and should sit on a 100 mm sub-base (150 mm for driveways) of compacted MOT Type-1 hardcore. Pointing can be done with mortar, but we recommend using a expoxy based jointing compound (such as Pointfix) as this will be quicker, easier and offer better performance and longevity.
